Streets of Rage Remake is a side-scrolling fighter game, and what the authors call a "tribute" to the original saga of the Sega Megadrive/Genesis series.

If you've never played the original game, then it doesn't really matter: the plot is quite familiar. A formerly happy city has been taken over by an evil crime syndicate, the police and city officials have all been paid off, and it's up to a small band of heroes to save the day.

Forget the standard storyline, though, the sheer scope of this project is what really matters. The game includes 103 stages, 40 cutscenes, 19 playable characters, 64 enemies and 8 different enemies, so there's plenty here to keep you entertained.

And the game rearranges the original storyline and level layouts, just a little, so even if you remember Sega's version, you'll still find a new world to explore here.

Verdict

An entertainingly faithful remake of the original Streets of Rage games
